The Secret to Getting Good at Anything...

If you want to get good at something, you have to be willing to suck at it first.

There’s this term in psychology called ‘exposure therapy’.

It roughly means that in order to get good at something or become experienced at something, you need to be willing to suck at it first…

But this isn’t how a lot of us operate.

A lot of us want to show up on day 1 like a seasoned professional.

Whether it’s with relationships, or sports, or business, or public speaking, or content creation, or writing—you name it.

We don’t want the world to see us in training; we want the world to see the results of our training.

But you can’t get one without the other…

Let me ask you this: who’s the last person you knew that was a professional at something before they even started it?

When was the last time you were perfect at something the first time you tried it?

Unfortunately, the world doesn’t put itself on pause to give you the privacy and time to get good at something before anybody sees you sucking at it first.

You need to be willing to show up anyway: raw, sloppy, and inexperienced.

When you think of an idol, someone you look up to, you often see their success.

What you DON’T often pay attention to is the months, years—decades even—of work they put in.

The failures. The letdowns. The time they spent not having met their goal, but still showing up anyway.

If you want to get somewhere, you have to start now. It’s as simple as that.

And undoubtedly, you won’t be as good now as you will when you’ve been doing it for 5 years. So… get going.

Now’s the time.

Much love, Devon G.
